Defending Candace Owens Was Not on My 2025 Bingo Card But Here We Are
While I personally disagree with much of Candace Owens’ rhetoric, I believe it is important to hear opposing views rather than silence them. Avoiding echo chambers is key to critical thinking, and false attacks on public figures (regardless of their views) sets a dangerous precedent.
Candace Owens is a controversial figure and one of the biggest names currently covering the Baldoni-Lively conflict. Unsurprisingly, I have seen divided reactions to her participation in the discussion where some enjoy it, while others would rather not see or hear her commentary.
I think public criticism of figures like Owens is fair as it comes with the territory of being a media personality. I myself disagree with about 70% of her content, particularly in 2020 when I found her political rhetoric divisive and dangerous. Candace has said things that offended me and my community during one of the most important movements of our lifetime.
Yet, I still prefer to listen to even her extreme views rather than limit myself to an echo chamber; only to be blindsided by the realization that a significant portion of the country actually thinks like her. Such is the danger of living in an ideological bubble.
The Cut Article Hit Piece
That being said, just because I don’t like Candace Owens’ views or how she talks about people who look like me does not mean I will turn a blind eye when false narratives are used against her.
For example, The Cut published an article misrepresenting her views, taking them out of context. While I disagree with much of what she says, using misinformation as a weapon is counterproductive.
We should be careful not to normalize a culture of false attacks as retaliation for controversial opinions, because once we accept falsehoods as a tactic, then no one is safe from them. There is already plenty to criticize about Candace Owens’ actual statements so the lies are unnecessary.
Diverse Opinions
As much as I disagree with Owens, I still believe her content is worth hearing. I don’t believe she should be silenced.
I make it a point to listen to Candace Owens and other conservative media personalities, including Piers Morgan, just as much as I consume liberal voices like Don Lemon and Angela Rye.
Why? Because hearing alternative and countering perspectives is essential to forming a well rounded opinion. This is the path to critical reasoning.
An echo chamber might make you believe that your views are the majority opinion, only to later realize that more than half the country actually disagrees with you.
When people were shamed for voicing their support for a certain political party, I developed the false impression that my views were shared by the majority until election results proved otherwise. I had simply trapped myself in an echo chamber and failed to see the reality.
I would rather know exactly what my ideological opponents think; not just for the sake of awareness, but because their beliefs impact my life and my rights.
Conclusion
Attacking them with insults into silence resolves not a single thing Overall, that silencing, insulting, or attacking opposing voices does not change anything. Instead, understanding their influence and impact is more valuable.
To be honest taking her out of context to make her look bad is almost insulting because it ignore a plethora of the harmful things she has actually said that deserve criticism.
Misrepresenting Candace Owens is not necessary when her actual statements provide enough reason for criticism. That’s why I don’t believe The Cut’s article Don’t Fall for Candace Owens’s Rebrand was written with genuine concern for the public. As someone who follows her content, I can say with certainty, she hasn’t rebranded. She still believes everything she has said in the past.”
Edit: I will never attempt to convince anyone to change their position on her. Just the same as I would not appreciate anyone trying to make me change my mind after everything she has said about my community.
I fully respect those who choose to not support her (to me the less supporters she has the more faith in humanity I gain).
I think it's important to diversify content from any one of your choosing. It doesn't have to be Candace.
Also Please continue to hold Candace accountable, never stop. My hope is that it is done honestly but at the end of the day how you choose to spend your time is your choice.
