Volume 14  Issue 76

The prestigious Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine reports in its June, 2010 issue that the vast majority of patients receiving alternative treatments for back pain preferred Chiropractic care over all other treatments.

The study, titled "Perceived Benefit of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for Back Pain", offered 17 possible alternative care choices to patients, including such therapies as Chiropractic, massage, yoga / tai chi / qi gong, Acupuncture, hypnosis, naturopathy, herbal therapies and relaxation techniques.

Chiropractors and their millions of satisfied patients won't be surprised to hear that 74 percent of all these former and current back pain patients declared Chiropractic as the favored approach, with massage a far distant second at 22 percent and all the rest following that.

"What we are seeing with these studies is compelling evidence that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for back pain sufferers - more and more, that light is Chiropractic care and other CAM approaches," said Gerard Clum, D.C., spokesperson for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress and president of Life Chiropractic College West.

Perhaps one study finding could be considered at all negative to CAM practitioners, although perhaps not too surprising: Only 24 percent of the survey respondents receiving alternative care said conventional medical practitioners suggested CAM for their back pain.

Most respondents turned to Chiropractic and other treatment modalities because they felt "conventional medicine would not help" their severe back pain.

"Back pain sufferers should be made aware of all treatment options, especially alternatives that have been scientifically proven to provide relief," Dr. Clum said. "While Chiropractic care has in the past been considered alternative, there is now a case to be made for making it the first choice for patients and, in the process, making interventions like injections and surgery the alternative approach."
